VMware IPO
Wow, exciting day for VMware. For those who haven’t yet seen the news, our parent company, EMC, announced a VMware IPO. Approximately 10% of VMware is being sold. This is all news to me too, but it’s damn exciting.
“VMware is one of the fastest-growing businesses in the history of the software industry. We expect the IPO to unlock more of VMware’s value for EMC shareholders while also strengthening its ability to retain and attract the software industry’s top talent.”
— Joe Tucci
I know many people have said they would invest in VMware if it had its own stock symbol rather than sharing EMC’s. Now you have no excuse! 😉
3D in VMware Fusion
Some people, including a couple of competitors, are of the belief that nobody to date has supported 3D in a virtualized environment in any usable way, and have made claims that they’ll be the first. It’s not their fault, this wasn’t so widely known. Afterall, we’ve only had this supported and documented for two years now.
Well, cat’s out of the bag now. I was doing my usual search for VMware on Digg, and this post came up showing a video of 3D in VMware Fusion. As you can see from the video that it links to, 3D in VMware is quite usable. 🙂
Update: The URL for the digg post has moved. Fixed the link.
So now please just tell me, this (3D-support) is going to be in the Linux versions of VMWare, too.
I hate to be the party-pooper[1], but this is likely because EMC has figured out their stock is basically worthless[2], and since VMware is really the only business they have that’s a) sexy, and b) relevant, it’s a hard sell trying to 1) hire and 2) keep people when their friends are getting hired at Google, who can offer stock that’s worth $400+ a share and still going up.
I can’t say that I blame them, and I’m happy that you (and crew) may finally get some options that are worth something, but… I can’t say I find the gesture all that impressive from an executive leadership standpoint.
I guess when you constantly fall asleep at the wheel, the corrections to get back on the road become increasingly erratic.
[1] Aren’t I always…
[2] Where I define “worthless” as “not having moved anywhere in the past five years“
suka: It has been for a long time now.
Preed: Yep, you’re right, they did realize their stock is worthless. This is why I’m so excited. We finally have our own stock symbol that has a potential for growth.
@ChipX86: Great, didn’t realize that until now 🙂 Still shows that you can hide stuff very well in the sight of everyone… (otherwise this would have been anounced / be easier to activate)
So where is your secret switch for the Coherence mode on Linux? ;p
Don’t be fooled. Only the real old timers will make any money out of this. So you will still have flight of talent from VMware. Also their top management is pretty junior. Some of their top product management guys have had most of their experience AT Vmware. Hence why there is no clear strategy in desktop (though the CEO has been harping on this in nearly every public announcement), no clear way to address Microsoft and Xen (open source), and no way to explain why the heck they are spending oodles of money for a new campus (the curse of the new campus in the Valley is well known).
So it seems only Tucci makes out. Keeps wolves at bay. Everyone else gets pretty much the same ol.
If it wasn’t for that worthless EMC stock ChipX86 you’d be working somewhere else.
Storagezilla: Why do you think this? I love working at VMware. I’m also not sure where your logic comes in with “worthless EMC stock” being the reason I work at VMware?
